JHR Talks Volunteering

I have found at our JHR campus chapter that being able to put both my time and money into this organization allows me to work as hard as I can for everything we stand for.
-
I think it's great to do both, where needed. I think you get more personal growth off of volunteering your time!

JHR events (like the upcoming Night for Rights) wouldn't be successful w/o the efforts of our awesome volunteers/their talents! #JHRchatsby Digital Ambassadors via twitter 4/25/2013 5:35:03 PM

Our Carleton Campus Chapter relies on both donations and volunteers to be successful.
-
Time is always more valuable. It can go along way when you can teach someone new skills to be self-sufficient. Someone once told me don't buy them the fish but teach them how to fish
-
Do you believe volunteering is a wealth-generated opportunity? Many individuals would love to volunteer but do not have the financial resources to support themselves without a job, how can these individuals still contribute?
-
Thanks for your question, Cindy. Grant, what would you say in response?

No I do not believe that you can only volunteer if you have money. Yes there are a large number of volunteer opportunities around the world that you pay to help with, but this does not cover local opportunities. Our Carleton JHR chapter has a small membership fee, though I would consider covering someone's if they could not afford it. As well we are always looking to partner with more people. I would say that there will always be initiatives locally that people can volunteer through without having to contribute any funds of their own.
-
Cindy: The reality is, people need money to live (that's obvious). However, volunteering does not have to be a full-time job. I would actually caution taking on too much at once, a lot of people do that and feel overwhelmed and end up leaving their volunteer position. Pace yourself, volunteer when you can, just be sure those you are volunteering for know that as well. If you commit to something, see it through
-
I have also found that volunteering for the things you are most passionate about allows you to give to and get more from the experience. Find something that you care about and stick with it. Giving as little or as much time and effort as you can.

Where do you feel that the future of volunteering is headed, especially in the context of volunteering for international development organizations?
-
Reality is that it's difficult to trust organizations when you give monetary donations. Sometimes only a small portion of the funds is actually given to the community or cause you're trying to help. Some organizations are well managed but it's hard to distinguish those from the rest
-
there is joy in helping to make things happened, more so when it is done without reward
-
Interesting you bring that up Christina. I saw an article today that said basing donation decisions on the overhead of the charity group was a bad idea. The author argued those organizations really need that overhead (administration fees) to be effective! What does everyone think?

Our head office volunteers, past and present support JHR in leaps and bounds! Thanks for all you do. #JHRChats #NVW http://ow.ly/kqjnLby Digital Ambassadors via twitter 4/25/2013 5:50:13 PM
